Why Clients Keep Coming Back: Building Trust in Teaching Clinical Facilities

The Speech-Language Institute (SLI) of Drexel University offers more than speech and language services. It provides a supportive environment where clients receive high-quality, evidence-based care while contributing to the education of future speech-language pathologists (SLP).

Clients often express pride in knowing their participation helps train graduate clinicians who will go on to serve diverse communities. This shared purpose creates a meaningful connection between clients, student clinicians, and the SLP profession.

"We strive to promote a culture of mutual respect and collaboration between the client, graduate clinician, and clinical educator,” said Anne Ruckdeschel, CCC-SLP, CBIS, clinical educator at SLI.  “When the approach is team-based, rather than clinician-driven, the outcomes are typically much better for everyone involved."

Student clinicians at the SLI are trained to take time to listen carefully, analyze communication needs, and individualize therapy. Sessions are intentionally paced to allow for thoughtful assessment, goal setting, and client education. As a result, clients frequently report feeling genuinely heard and understood, an essential component of effective speech-language therapy.

Each individual benefits from this team-based approach that includes graduate clinicians, licensed and certified clinical supervisors, and interdisciplinary professionals when appropriate. Clear communication is central to the clinical site’s philosophy. Student clinicians explain therapeutic goals, strategies, and progress in accessible language, while supervisors ensure clinical accuracy and consistency. When clients and their families understand why specific speech, language, cognitive, or swallowing targets are selected, trust deepens and engagement in therapy increases.

Although student clinicians rotate as part of their training, the SLI maintains a consistent culture of empathy, professionalism, and continuity of care. Many clients often describe the Elkins Park, Pennsylvania-based clinical facility as a welcoming, family-like environment where their communication goals are respected and prioritized.

When clients return for continued services and refer others, they affirm the SLI’s reputation for quality care and meaningful connection. The clinical site continues to expand access to services, promote clinical excellence, and strengthen client-clinician relationships.
