Managing Diabetes Together: Workshop Series at The Eye Institute

Do you want to learn more about managing your diabetes?

This fall, several of Drexel University’s clinical facilities in Elkins Park and Oak Lane - including The Eye Institute and the Pennsylvania Ear Institute – are partnering with Temple University Health to offer “Real World Diabetes,” a series of free educational workshops to help patients and the general public manage diabetes and protect their health.

Blood sugar testing pic1This program, led by a certified diabetes care and education specialist, will teach participants what they need to know about life with diabetes. Proper diabetes management is necessary for protecting both eye care and hearing, as high blood sugar can damage the blood vessels in the eyes and the nerves in the ears over time.

Health care professionals will be available to discuss medications, how diabetes affects your body — including vision, hearing, and important lab work. Optional HbA1c, weight, blood pressure, and hearing screenings will be available at no cost.

Sessions will be held on the following Mondays:

  • “What is Diabetes?” — Sept.15
  • "What’s Cooking?” — Sept. 22
  • “Dining with Diabetes — Sept. 29
  • “Feeling Good: Physically and Mentally” — Oct. 6
  • “Preventing Complications: Throughout Your Body” — Oct. 20
  • “Preventing Complications: Eyes and Ears” — Oct. 27
  • “Whole Health Screening Day” — Nov. 3
  • “SMART Goals and Behavior Change Techniques” — Nov. 17

This is a series, so attendance at each session is necessary. All workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at The Eye Institute of Drexel University.
