Siva Meiyeppen, OD, is the newest member of The Eye Institute (TEI) of Salus University’s pediatric and binocular vision service. She is a passionate provider who enjoys making a positive impact in her patients’ lives.
“Pediatrics is a rewarding field to work in, especially diagnosing, managing and treating visual conditions,” she said. “Eighty percent of learning is visually related, so identifying children who have a visual issue that may prevent them from being successful in school is critical.
Dr. Meiyeppen earned her bachelor’s degree in cell biology and genetics from the University of British Columbia and her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry. Her clinical externship rotations helped further develop her skills in primary, pediatric and urgent eye care as well as low vision, vision therapy and ocular diseases. As a former pediatric resident at TEI, she worked in the Brain Injury Clinic, assisting with the treatment of visual disorders related to brain injuries. It was there where her clinical interest in treating traumatic brain injuries and using vision therapy first began.
“I have a special clinical interest in vision therapy and traumatic brain injury,” she said. “Vision therapy allows working one on one with patients, and helping them improve their symptoms. The Eye Institute offers vision therapy four days a week. We have some of the most cutting-edge equipment in our clinic to help get our patients to their best visual potential.”
Dr. Meiyeppen is happy to return to TEI to further her optometric practice and is excited about the opportunity to work with notable colleagues and utilize some of the latest advancements in optometric technology.
“It is an honor to work alongside distinguished faculty members that have been leaders in our field,” she said. “This is an environment where you are constantly challenged and have access to not only a wide array of technology and services, but to an incredible network of doctors.”
