Looking Out for Kids 2015

The University’s ninth annual Looking Out for Kids charity was a WOW! of a success on Saturday evening. With a theme of superheroes – “because every child needs a hero,” attendees were greeted by a Batmobile parked just outside the Hafter Student Center, complete with Bat phone and flamethrower.

NBC10 Emmy-award winning journalist and anchor, Rosemary Connors, was host for the second year. Ms. Connors and Dr. Michael H. Mittelman, Salus president, welcomed attendees, inviting them to have a good time for a great cause. Dr. Mittelman took the opportunity to offer special recognition to Salus Board of Trustees member, Dr. Barry Farkas ’76, for his service on the Board and his support of Looking Out for Kids over the years. 

With student volunteers and some guests in superhero costumes, aerial artists pouring champagne, a photo booth complete with props, live entertainment, and plenty of hors d’oeuvres and beverages, the evening was fun-filled. Most auctions items were open for online bids prior to the event but online bidding also took place on Saturday. During the evening, some live auction items were open for bids with auctioneer and emcee Dr. Andy Gurwood, who kept everyone highly entertained with his humor and enthusiasm.

Looking Out for Kids raises money to provide uninsured and under-insured schoolchildren with eye exams and eyeglasses. Funds from last year’s event alone helped to provide more than 2100 vision screenings, 500 comprehensive eye exams, and over 850 pairs of eyeglasses to children who do not have direct access to vision care. Each child receives two pairs of eyeglasses – one for home and one for school.

Special thanks to Mr. Pete Licari, who provided the Batmobile and enthusiastically and patiently answered questions from many Bat fans, as well as entertainer Beth Tinnon for their participation in this important fundraiser.
